Corpse Pose (Savasana)
Taking a restorative midday “nap” can help you reduce stress and stay healthy and available for your family. The purpose is not to really sleep, but to rest your body and mind. A savasana nap has the added benefit of reminding you to be mindful as you relax and refresh yourself. Savasana typically is practiced at the end of a yoga session as a way to rest the muscles (and the mind!) while allowing the poses just completed to work their magic, but it’s also a great way to quiet your mind and body and practice a refreshing silent meditation.
Corpse pose, or savasana, is done while lying flat on your back on a yoga mat or a rug. Many find it more comfortable to place a bolster, rolled towel, or pillow under their knees. A folded hand towel or a scented eye pillow placed over your closed eyes will help you relax further. Some people like to play soothing instrumental music while taking a savasana rest.
To begin, bring your arms straight down by your sides. If you are cold, bring your arms close to your body, and if you are warm, move your hands about several inches or more away from your sides. If you wish, using a light blanket can feel comforting. Remember, the intention is not to fall asleep but to remain alert in your mind and very still in your body, which is surprisingly relaxing, particularly if you maintain the pose for a good ten minutes or slightly longer.
When you feel rested (or when your music or timer cues you that the time is over), roll to your side, come up slowly, pause to take a few deep, cleansing breaths, and then open your eyes.
